Tarra is an authentic 38 foot timber Spray, with another 11
foot of bowsprit, built from the plan lines in Joshua Slocums book- "Sailing
Alone Around the World". Powered by a 120 horse Perkins, a Paragon hydraulic
gearbox, swinging a 20 inch three bladed prop. Built of inch and a quarter black
butt hardwood nailed and roved. She has a centre cockpit, a beam of fourteen
foot ten inches and a draft of four foot eight inches with the addition of
timber bilge keels which enable her to sit upright when beached. She is gaffed
rigged with tan sails and sail covers. The decks have been raised to allow for
more head room down below.
Tarra is fitted with
- electric anchor winch,
- 80 pound plough anchor with 200 ft of stud link half inch
chain
- 150 lbs fisherman and a 40 lbs fisherman anchors
- rope box on the fore deck
- two water barrels either side of the mast for water to
the hand basin
- wheel steering,compass,auto pilot, depth sounder and hand
held GPS
- 12 volt generator to charge 400 amp hour house batteries
- 2.7 kva 240 volt generator, 40 amp battery charger and
650 watt inverter
- 25 litre 240 volt hot water system
- shower, electric toilet, pressurized hot and cold water
- 700 litres of fuel, 700 litres of water all in stainless
steel tanks
- Stainless drip tray under motor and gearbox.
Under the port side fore deck there is a double berth with
storage under the stbd side fore deck . In the Saloon (on the port side) there
is a 4 seat table with drawer, flat screen TV, stereo, DVD sound surround
player, VCR, digital desk top box and 12v fridge.
Stbd of the saloon is the self contained bathroom. Aft of the bathroom is the
galley. The galley has stainless steel one and quarter bowl sink, microwave
oven, two burner gas stove with grill and oven. Storage in five drawers under
sink and a pot drawer under stove. The top drawer pulls out into a full length
ironing board.
Amid ships under centre cockpit is the engine room.
The aft cabin has a double bed, a single bed, dressing table, hanging space over
foot of double bed and shelves.
There is more storage under the rear deck. The stern is fitted with davits for
the dingy, which comes with a 2hp outboard. There is a duck board fitted to the
stern.
Tarra was launched in 1981 and has been to the Whitsundays on three occasions.
Tarra has been well maintained and used as a live aboard for the past 20 years.
She has been made very comfortable over that time and will be sadly missed but
it is time to move on..
